Kualiti Kitar Alam won 2010/2011 Prime Minister Hibiscus Notable Award

Kualiti Kitar Alam Sdn Bhd has received the Notable Achievement Award for Small and Medium Enterprise category at the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award 2010/2011. The company has maintained this award since the last two cycles of this competitions.
Chief Operating Officer of Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd Suhaimee Mahdar received the award on behalf of Kualiti Kitar Alam from Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato’ Seri Douglas Uggah Embas at the ceremony held on 20 January 2012 at Grand Dorsett Subang Hotel, Subang Jaya. The guest of honour was Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award, which was launched in 1996 is the premier private sector environmental award for business and industry in Malaysia. It was jointly organised by Business Council for Sustainability & Responsibility Malaysia, Enviromental Management & Research Association of Malaysia, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers and Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

2011 NCOSH Excellence Award for Kualiti Alam

Kualiti Alam was honored with the 2011 National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH) Excellence Award in the category of Utility Cleanliness on 21 December 2011 at at a ceremony held at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya. The event was officiated by YB Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam, Human Resources Minister.

En Suhaimee Mahdar, Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd’s Chief Operating Officer and En Hamdan Osman, Senior Manager of Safety, Health & Environment Department received the award from the Deputy Minister of Human Resources as well as Chairman of NCOSH, YB Senator Dato’ Maznah Mazlan.
Kualiti Alam has previously won the Excellence OSH award for the same category from the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health for year 2007 and 2010.

The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health award winners were selected based on the several criteria including organisation commitment and performance in occupational safety and health. This year, 144 companies participated for 18 awards covering various types of industries such as electronics, petroleum, construction, forestry and also a competition for the CEO of the year in OSH award. Other than that, a special award and media award were also presented by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health in its 11th award presentation.

The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health which comprises representatives from government, employer, worker as well as non government organisation was established under the Ministry of Human Resource to chart national occupational safety and health directions and policies.

Environment Idaman Launches Free Garbage Bins and Toll Free Hotline

Environment Idaman today launch its free garbage bins and Toll Free Hotline for Aduan Sisa at a ceremony held at Taman Lumba Kuda, Alor Setar. The garbage bins was a part of the 3 million bins that will be given for free to households in 7 states by the three concessionaires that have been appointed by the Federal Government. Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung who is also the MP for Alor Setar officiated the launching ceremony.
Total of 48,000 garbage bins with a capacity of 120 litres will be distributed in Alor Setar, Kedah and 3,200 garbage bins with a capacity of 660 litres will be distributed in Kangar, Perlis.
Also being launched was the toll free hotline for Aduansisa which is 1-800-88-7472. The hotline were being operated by the Perbadanan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal dan Pembersihan Awam (PPAPPA), a government agency to monitor the three municipal waste concessions (E-Idaman, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and Southern Waste Management).
The launching ceremony received a crowd about 1000 residents of Alor Setar. Also present was Director of Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd, Encik Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad.

UEM Environment named winner at ACCA MaSRA 2011

UEM Environment Sdn Bhd (UEME) has been named as Winner of the “Reporting on Environmental Performance” award at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Malaysia Sustainability Reporting Awards (MaSRA) 2011. The company also received Commendation in the Assurance category.

UEM Environment’s Managing Director Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad received both awards at the ACCA MaSRA 2011 presentation ceremony held on 4 October 2011 at InterContinental Kuala Lumpur.

Among highlights on the judges’ comments on UEME’s Sustainability Report 2010 are:

• Demonstrates incremental improvements and progression having moved this year from the quantification of its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the past four years to implementing a company-wide project to manage and reduce GHG emissions
• Only company to report on its carbon footprint and voluntary reduction of carbon emissions, according to the GHG protocol classification of direct and indirect emissions
• Provides comprehensive graphical and diagrammatic presentation of comparative data for annual carbon emissions from activities material to operations
• Comprehensive and transparent disclosure on monitoring of environmental and consumption indicators such as resource use (water and air quality) and noise monitoring
• Comprehensive disclosure strategy towards the preservation of biodiversity includes bio-aquatic monitoring, bioassay testing, and chlorella vulgaris growth rate
• Detailed description of continuous improvement programme
• Flora and fauna survey of sites to identify the type and total number of species aligned to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species and those listed under the Malaysian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

This is the fifth consecutive year the company had won the award in recognition of its reporting on best practices in the areas of social, environment and economic sustainability. The company won the First Reporting Award in 2007; Best Environmental Report in 2008; Best Sustainability Report (Overall) in 2009 and 1st Runner Up Best Sustainability Report in 2010.

Kualiti Alam won MOSHPA Occupational, Safety and Health Gold Star Award 2011

Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd has once again won the MOSHPA Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Gold Star Award 2011 for its outstanding achievement in OSH management. This is the second time that Kualiti Alam won this award since last year.

Deputy Minister of Human Resources YB Senator Dato’ Maznah Mazlan presented the award to Kualiti Alam’s Managing Director Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad at the 7th MOSHPA/PERKESO OSH Excellence Awards 2011 presentation ceremony held on 30 September at Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort, Kuala Lumpur.
MOSHPA (Malaysian Occupational Safety and Health Professional’s Association) is a non-government organisation on OSH that aims to guide safety practitioners to achieve best practices of OSH in Malaysia.

Environment Idaman gets 22-year concession

Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd was one of three companies awarded a 22-year concession to manage solid waste collection and public cleansing management in the Peninsular following a tripartite agreement signed between the Federal Government, nine State Governments and the three companies.

Under the agreement, Environment Idaman will be responsible for solid waste management in Perlis and Kedah. The other two companies are Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, which is managing solid waste in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan; and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd that is taking care of Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

The agreement was officiated at a signing ceremony, held in Putrajaya on 19 September 2011 and witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. At the signing, Environment Idaman was represented by its Director Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad.

The privatisation of solid waste management in the country is a result of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (also known as Act 672) which focuses on all aspects of solid waste management from generation, collection, transportation, treatment to disposal and had came into effect on 1 September this year.

Environment Idaman is a subsidiary of E-Idaman, a joint-venture company between UEM Environment Sdn Bhd and Metacorp Berhad which established in 2002.

Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd and Kualiti Khidmat Alam Sdn Bhd were named winners at the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Awards 2010.

Kualiti Khidmat Alam won the Gold Merit Award while Kualiti Alam received the Gold Class II Award at the MSOSH OSH 2010 Awards ceremony held at One World Hotel in Bandar Utama on 22 July. The awards were presented by Deputy Minister of Human Resources YB Senator Dato’ Maznah Mazlan.

Both awards were in recognition of the commendable safety and health performance for the year 2010 by the two companies. This was the 5th award from MSOSH for Kualiti Alam since the company started taking part in 2006 and 4th Award for Kualiti Khidmat Alam since its debut participation in 2008.

The annual MSOSH OSH awards are presented in six categories with the Platinum Award being the highest although there is no winner for this category this year. A total of 150 organisations took part in the awards.

ENSEARCH 2011 National Photography Competition Workshop

Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia (ENSEARCH) organized a half-day photography workshop in conjunction with its ENSEARCH National Photography Competition 2011 (ENPC 2011). The free workshop was held in two sessions at Faber Towers, Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, 2 July 2011. The first session occurred from 8am till 12 noon and the second session, 2pm to 5pm. A total of 100 amateur photographers showed up for both sessions, which was conducted by one of ENPC 2011 judges, Mr. Sanjitpaal Singh from Full Circle Pix. “Today, photography has become a common hobby, especially among the younger generation. Our amateur photography competition is aimed at reaching out to the younger generation, and to make them appreciate our beautiful environment in Malaysia,” said Puan Susi Razikin, ENPC 2011 chairperson.
ENPC 2011’s goal is to create public awareness about the beauty of Malaysia’s resplendent environment.
This year, the competition is split into three categories: Nature in your backyard, Habitat loss, habitat gain, and People & Places. The closing date for the competition is 31 August 2011. ENSEARCH is a non-profit association of organizations, professionals, students and people with interest in learning and promoting effective ways to manage the impacts of human activities on the environment. GLC Open Day 2011

UEM Environment joined UEM Group Berhad and other Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs) to participate in the GLC Open Day 2011 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 24 to 26 June 2011, with the aim of showcasing the Group’s achievements and progress to the Rakyat.
Themed, Nation-Building, Touching Lives, the event is the first of its kind to communicate with the Rakyat and inform them on the mandate and contributions of GLCs and GLICs to the nation’s economy. In addition to that, the event also highlighted programmes and initiatives undertaken by these companies for the benefit of the Rakyat and the nation.
At the event, UEM Group’s exhibition booth showcased its expertise in four core businesses – Expressways, Township & Property Development, Engineering & Construction, and Asset & Facility Management. There were also highlights on its initiatives and programmes in corporate responsibility and human capital development, which was showcased in five clusters. The three-day event attracted more than 30,000 visitors.
UEM Environment Managing Director Encik Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad and Kualiti Alam Chief Operating Officer, Tuan Haji Suhaimee Mahdar also made special appearances at the CEO Appearance Segment at the UEM Group booth on the second and third day of the exhibition.

Scheduled Waste Management Seminar in Penang

Kualiti Alam joint organised the Management Seminar and Hands-On Training for The Handling of Schedule Waste with the Department of Environment (DOE) Penang on 7 and 8 June 2011 at the Sunway Carnival Convention Centre, Pulau Pinang. The two-day event saw a total participation of 239 scheduled waste generators from Penang.
In the opening ceremony, Director of Penang State DOE, Dato’ Hassan B. Mat said, “The world today is progressing rapidly in the field of technology. Therefore, we need to work hard to maintaining our own standards of service to align with the continuously progressing technology industry.
The efforts of preserving the environment must always be in our heart as we move forward into the future.” Later, Encik Azhar Zainal Abidin, Assistant Senior Environment Control Officer of Penang’s Department of Environment briefed participants on the latest scenarios and status of Penang’s schedule waste management, and the Malaysian Environment Quality Act (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005. Mr. Sathish Kurup, Deputy General Manager of Kualiti Khidmat Alam also took to the stage to give a presentation on the latest updates of UEM Environment. The event continued in the afternoon with a handson training on onitoring the movement of scheduled waste through e-consignment note, which was presented by Assistant Environment Control Officer of Perak’s Department of Environment, Encik Amran Mubarak and Mr. Tan Teik Lai.

UEM Environment-Kualiti Alam has won the prestigious RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Gold Award 2011, the fourth in a row since 2008.
Kualiti Khidmat Alam continued its successful streak by winning the Gold Award for the third time. Kualiti Khidmat Alam also won a Gold Award for “Managing Occupational Road Risk” under RoSPA.
The RoSPA Awards scheme is not only about reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work; it also encourages organizations to develop robust health and safety management systems.
Both awards were presented at 2011 RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards Ceremonies for Achievement Award Winners at May 17 – 19, 2011 in the Kings Suite of the Hilton Metropole Birmingham, NEC.
The RoSPA awards are given our in non-competitive category to mark the achievement of organizations. The awards are graded at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organizations which maintain high OSH standards could attain gold medals, President’s Awards and Orders of Distinction.

Kualiti Alam Demos Bulb Eater to Help Recycling Efforts

In conjunction with the Living Green Day 2011, UEM Environment Berhad’s subsidiary, Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd has demonstrated the recycling of fluorescent lamps and light bulbs using the Bulb Eater machine.

During the event, UEM Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Izzaddin Idris has joined the crowd to feed the Bulb Eater machine with some florescent lamps provided by the Kualiti Alam team.

UEM Environment had acquired a machine which literally eats the lamp and neutralized its hazardous content while recovering glass and metal for recycling. The USA made machine was being used at Kualiti Alam to enhance its operation method especially in dealing of mercury waste treatment and disposal.

The machine can greatly reduce storage needs of used fluorescent lamps, minimise handling of the lamps, create a safer and cleaner environment, and typically cut recycling costs by up to 50 cents per lamp.

The Malaysia Exploration & Production (E&P) Health Safety Environment Forum Event was held on 31 March 2011 at Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur. This one-day forum was organised by Petronas Berhad to enhance Health, Safety & Health (HSE) excellence practices in Malaysia amongst E&P business.
The forum was officiated by Vice President, Petronas (M) Petroleum Management, E&P Business, Encik Ramlan Malek. Papers presented during the forum were from Petronas Petroleum Management Unit (PMU), Department of Environment Malaysia and other Multinational Oil & Gas companies. In conjunction with the event, an exhibition was held where a total of eight companies including UEM Environment participated.
Kualiti Alam Chief Operating Officer, Tuan Haji Suhaimee Mahdar was on hand to welcome VIP Encik Ramlan on his visit. At the exhibition, the UEM Environment booth highlighted its latest products and services such as the Kualiti Alam Modular Incinerator (KAMI), Electronic Integrated Waste Information System (eIWIS), Industrial Cleaning Services and Wastewater and Sewerage Services.

Infraassets 2011 World Congress And Exhibition

UEM Group Berhad showcased its expertise in Asset & Facility Management (AFM) services at the 1st World Congress and Exhibition on Infrastructure Asset Management (INFRAASSETS 2011) held on 22 February 2011 at the Putra World Trade Centre.
UEM Group’s AFM operating companies participating at the event comprised Faber Group Berhad, Kualiti Alam Sdn. Bhd., Opus Group Berhad and Projek Penyelenggaraan Lebuhraya Berhad (Propel). In addition to an exhibition booth, UEM Group also fielded two of its prominent speakers at the global forum – Ashok Shah from Faber Group Berhad who presented a paper entitled “Lifecycle Management of Healthcare Assets” and Chin Chi Haw from Opus Group Berhad who presented “Performance Based Lifecycle Management of Highway Assets”.
At the event, UEM Group also featured its asset and management service offerings – a complete life cycle
approach from conceptualisation, planning and design, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance, optimisation, rehabilitation and upgrading, right up to the last stages of disposal and renewal of assets. E-Idaman Launch New Trucks and Garbage Bins

Environment Idaman, a subsidiary of UEM Environment Sdn Bhd today launched its new compactor truck and garbage bins for the state of Kedah at Wisma Darul Aman. The official launching was graced by Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Chor Chee Heung. “This new compactor of Environment Idaman will improve the collection of solid waste in Kedah,” said Datuk Chor during his keynote address. A total of 20 brand new 16 cubic meter compactors that capable of collecting 10 tonnes of municipal waste were launched.

The event also held a demonstration of an upgraded Environment Idaman tricycle and the Badger System. The tricycle has the capabilities of lifting a 120 liters garbage bin, thus making the garbage collection process more efficient as it only took one person of doing it within a shorter time. The Badger System is a centralized underground garbage system that is capable to temporary stores garbage up to 2.5 tonnes before being transported to the sanitary landfill. The badger system also has a sealed lid to eliminate bad odor from the garbage.

Both Directors of Environment Idaman, Encik Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad, and Datuk Azmil Khalili Dato’ Khalid, were also present during the ceremony.

Community Dialogue 2010

Kualiti Alam held a dialogue session on 15th December 2010 with residents from three villages near the Integrated Scheduled Waste Management Centre in Bukit Nanas Negeri Sembilan. The dialogue at Kampung Jimah Lama Community Hall was attended by 40 residents of Kampung Jimah Lama, Kampung Seri Sendayan and Kampung Tanah Merah.
The event began with an opening speech by Encik Sulaiman Dato’ Ahmad, Human Resource General Manager of UEM Environment.
“This dialogue session was initiated by Kualiti Alam to maintain close relations with all the communities and also to share the latest developments at the Waste Management Centre with the residents”, said Encik Sulaiman.
The dialogue session was chaired by Kualiti Alam Security Chief, Capt. (R) Rahizad Abdullah and Kampung Jimah Lama JKKK chairman, Encik Shafie Alwi.
The session commenced with a briefing on the Environmental Monitoring Programme (EMP) carried in 2010 by Encik Hamdan Osman. He shared with the community monitoring programme activities conducted by a third party which covered plant emission, quality of river water, ground water and flora and fauna. He said that Kualiti Alam had maintained the environmental requirements set by Department of Environment.
The events ended with a Question and Answer Session with the residents. Among those participated in the dialogue was Puan Dalilah Bt Haji Mahmood of Kampung Jimah Lama who asked if the operation of Kualiti Alam could affect the productivity of fruit trees as some farmers in the village were facing poor yield recently.. Encik Hamdan Osman said the operation of Kualiti Alam was unlikely to affect trees and suggested those with the same problem to raise the issue with the local agricultural department as the problem could be more related the field. The events ended with a light tea for all the participants.

8th Consecutive IKM Lab Excellence Award

Kualiti Alam continued its illustrious laboratory performance with the achievement of its 8th consecutive Institut Kimia Malaysia Excellence Award on 10 December 2010.

The 2010 award was presented by Dato’ Madinah Mohamad, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur. Encik Mohamad Yusof Ismail of Environmental Management Services division of Kualiti Alam represented the company.

IKM Excellence Award is an annual award given out to laboratories by Institute Kimia Malaysia (IKM) in recognition of their laboratories that have achieved competency in the practice of analytical work, achieving quality goals in line with ISO/IEC 17025 and is able to operate with safety and health features in the workplace.

( WMC) in Bukit Nanas Negeri Sembilan. The Omani team led by Engineer Said Darwish, Director General of Health Control & Waste Water, Ministry of Regional Municipality and Water Resources of Oman
was on a five-day visit to Malaysia.
The team toured various plants including Kualiti Alam Modular Iincinerator( KAMI), Kualiti Kitar Alam Recycling & Recovery faciities and the Secured Landfill. Earlier, Tuan Haji Suhaimee Mahdar , UEM Environment Chief Operating Officer briefed the delegates on the operations and services of UEM Environment Group. On Thursday, the delegates visited the Special Builders Sdn Bhd End Of Life (ELV) Plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The Omani Team also held discussion with UEM Group top management at Mercu UEM in Kuala Lumpur.
