The annual event serves as a platform to strengthen relationships amongst employees of Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd and Jabatan Alam Sekitar (JAS) officials nationwide, marking its sixth year running and saw some 450 personnel of Kualiti Alam and JAS coming together to participate in the games, namely badminton and futsal.  Over 32 teams took part in both games, and whilst the games were on going, the organisers ran several activities such as lucky draws and live entertainment to keep spirits high.

Team JAS Wilayah Persekutuan KL (WPKL) emerged as winner for badminton and scooped the title for the ladies’ futsal competition.  E-Idaman on the other hand won the men’s Futsal. The game finally came down to Kualiti Alam defending the overall champion title which alas was won JAS WPKL who was named as the new overall champion.  Our heartiest congratulations to the winning team!

The closing ceremony of the Karnival Sukan Kualiti Alam – JAS was presided by Azmanuddin Haq, Managing Director of UEM Environment. In his speech, Azmanuddin stressed that the sporting activities is aimed at not only providing the workforce with a healthy body and mind but to also foster the spirit of teamwork and solidarity that will lead to an increase in productivity and quality of work for the organisation.

The award was presented to Amran Mohd of Kualiti Alam’s Environmental Management Services Department at the Malam Kimia 2012 that was held on 30 November at the Sime Darby Convention Centre.  The event was graced YB Datuk Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The annual IKM Excellence Award accords recognition to laboratories that are committed towards achieving excellence in providing quality and competent testing services whilst adhering to the requirements on as stipulated in ISO/IEC 17025.

The annual event, which is organised by Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (PPSPPA) since 2011, was held simultaneously all over Peninsular Malaysia with the exception of Perak, Selangor and Penang and was officiated by Minister Housing and Local Government, YB Dato’ Seri Chor Chee Heung in Putrajaya.

Held in conjunction with “Hari Kitar Semula Kebangsaan”, the event aims to promote and create awareness on recycling amongst the urban and suburban communities.  The event attracted some 25,000 participants, who had registered to take part in the four categories ranging between three to ten kilometre.

An interesting fact on the event – PPSPPA had imposed a unique payment method onto participants where they are required to ‘pay’ the registration fee using recyclable items such as newspapers, plastic bottles or aluminium tins.  This is part of PPSPA’s campaign to promote awareness on recycling while simultaneously propagating a healthy lifestyle amongst participants.

On a different note, on 28 August 2012, Environment Idaman Sdn Bhd (ENVI) has officially received a directive from Jabatan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal Negara (JPSPN) to commence full KPI in Langkawi Service Unit (LKWSU) by 1 November 2012.

ENVI kick-start the celebration on 28 October, where residents of DUN Pauh, Guring Pauh, Perlis congregated at Masjid Al Mursyid to witness the ceremony that was officiated by Perlis Exco, YBM Dato’ Seri Diraja Syed Razlan Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail.  Two cows were sacrificed for Qurban of which the meat were packed and distributed to the poor and needy.  SY Kasturi Enterprise, a sub-contractor of Environment Idaman also shared the spirit of Qurban by donating one cow to Taman Sri Permai, Alor Setar, Kedah on 27 October.

29 October saw Kualiti Alam organising its Qurban celebration for its staff at the KESUKA Clubhouse, Waste Management Centre in Negeri Sembilan. The celebration started with the sacrificial slaughter of two cows by Imam Abdullah of Kg. Sendayan. KESUKA’s President, Sulaiman Kamilan led the ‘gotong royong’ to pack and distribute the meat to all Muslim staff of Kualiti Alam. A special dish, ‘sup tulang’ was served to all as part of lunch. Earlier, a simple ceremony was held on 25 October, where Mohd Nor Suradi Man, Head of WMC led the giveaway of four cows to the surrounding villages namely, Kg. Jimah Lama, Kg. Jimah Baru, Kg. Sendayan and Kg. Gadong Jaya.

A total of four teams from Kualiti Alam competed in the Kejohanan Bowling Piala Pusingan on 12 October organised by Kelab Sukan dan Kebajikan, Department of Environment, Melaka held at Melaka International Bowling Centre.

The tournament saw the participation of 50 teams from various industries and the non-governmental organisations around the state, competing for cash prizes worth RM1,500, hampers and plaques.  Kualiti Alam’s very own Hafizah Mohd Fozi from Environmental Management Services Department emerged as the winner in the ladies category. Prizes were presented by Tuan Haji Abd Hapiz bin Abdul Samad, Director of the Department of Environment, Melaka.

In a separate event, staff of E-Idaman and Environment Idaman participated in a bowling friendly organised by Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (PPSPPA) on 24 November at Wonder Bowl, the Mines Shopping Mall, Mines Resort City.

A total of 106 participants had competed in the tournament, including representatives from Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, Ministry of Housing and Local Government (MHLG) and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWME).

ENVI was represented by two teams; Team ENVI comprising of Bun Yin s/o Ai An, Shaiful Azli Sahran, Azrai Mohd Zain and Azira Amran while Team VIP ENVI is made up of with representation from UEM Environment i.e. its Managing Director, Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad, Juwenry Anjung, Sathish Kurup, Mohamad Gary and Harish Mirza.

Shahrin Amir and Haslinda of MHLG emerged as winners of both men and women’ category, while Khoo Joo Bee and Datin Samsiah of MHLG bagged the title for VIP Category. SWME was announced Group Winner of the tournament with a total pin fall of 1606.  Prizes, consisting of Giant shopping vouchers were presented by YBhg Datuk Haji Zaini Md Noor, Chief Executive Officer of PPSPPA.

Some 26 volunteers spent the whole evening cleaning up parts of the river and the adjacent areas. This annual programme was carried out to enhance the environmental awareness and highlight the importance of preservation and rehabilitation of rivers as Sungai Unyai.

Sg. Unyai is a tributary of Sg. Janging which is drained to the western part of WMC and it’s a small stream with relatively low average daily flows.

This 3R program was well received; garnering support from some 40 parents from the school’s Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru (PIBG) that brought recyclable items such as old newspapers and plastic bottles. Funds collected from the program was chanelled back to the school’s PIBG fund.

This year, the Eid Mubarak celebration and UEM Environment Open House was held on 12 September 2012 at its Waste Management Centre (WMC).

Scrumptious meals such as kambing golek, ayam golek , nasi minyak, cucur udang and cendol were prepared for guests at this joyful event. There were also stalls serving fried mee, fried kway teow, soto, lemang, rendang, fruits and drinks.

Orphans and the elders from the five surrounding villages were also invited to join in the merriment. The event also saw UEM Environment’s Managing Director, En Azmanuddin Haq Ahmad handing out donations to each Jawatankusa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung. Zaki Abdul Aziz, Senior General Manager Business Development Department also distributed festive goodies and duit raya to the children.

A special performance, Caklempong and live performance by a local band enlivened the event. Staffs were also given the opportunity to show their talent at a special karaoke session.

A series of audit processes have been conducted by the certification body on 13 to 15 August. The recognition is a testimony of the company’s continuous commitment in maintaining the highest quality and best practices in Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Management System.

This is the third time Kualiti Alam has been recertified by SIRIM. The company first obtained its ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications in 2000. It has established the Integrated Management System (IMS), namely Quality Management System (ISO 9001), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OHSAS 18001) since 2008.

MS 1722 certificate is the latest addition of its IMS where the certificate was awarded in 2010.  MS 1722 is a Malaysian standard that provides requirements on Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OHSMS) and basis for the development of sustainable OSH culture in an organisation.

Following this recertification, the auditors of SIRIM had recommended for renewal of Kualiti Alam’s ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 certificates and the new revision of MS 1722 version 2011.

50 underprivileged people, which included single mothers, single fathers and old folks chosen from five villages, namely, Kg Felda Sendayan, Kg Jimah Baru, Kg Jimah Lama, Taman Gadong Jaya and Ladang Tanah Merah were brought together at the Ramadhan celebration, where festive goodies were distributed. 50 Malaysian flags were also shared at the event to commemorate Malaysia’s 55th Merdeka celebration. Ina separate event, 41 staff members celebrated a small Raya gathering at the KESUKA Clubhouse on 15 August, where festive goodies and duit raya were given out by the Management.

The receipt of approval showcased Ministy of Health and Department of Environment’s confidence in Kualiti Alam as well as the Company’s experience and proficiency in running its operations and the capability of the Kualiti Alam’s KAMI Plant in treating hazardous and clinical waste.

Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd and Kualiti Khidmat Alam Sdn Bhd  was recognised for having “A Very Good OSH” record performance for the year 2011 by the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH). The recognition was conferred recently at the MSOSH OSH Awards 2011 where both companies was also accorded the MSOSH OSH Gold Class II Award.

This was the 7^th award from MSOSH for Kualiti Alam since the company started taking part in 2005 and 5^th Award for Kualiti Khidmat Alam since its participation in 2007.

The award was presented by Ir. Fuad Abas, President of MSOSH and Chairman of MSOH OSH Award 2011 to En. Mohd Norsuradi Man, Head of Waste Management Centre (WMC). Representing Kualiti Khidmat Alam was En. Zaki Abdul Aziz, Senior General Manager, Business Development of UEM Environment Sdn Bhd.

The Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 6 July 2012 at Istana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and the guest of honour was YB Senator Dato’ Maznah Mazlan, Deputy Minister of Human Resources cum Chairman of National Council for Occupational Safety and Health, who  had also officiated the event.

Let’s extend our warmest CONGRATULATIONS to our colleagues in KA and KKA for their continued success in producing award-winning work, which will hopefully provide further impetus for these companies to continue their efforts and commitment in this area and inspire other Group of companies as well.

The annual safety and health performance awards from MSOSH is intended to give due recognition to all member organisations and companies which have achieved commendable safety and health records and/or have shown improvement in occupational safety and health processes through sound safety and health management systems. A total of 142 organisations participated in this year’s awards under seven categories.

Tahniah Kepada KUALITI ALAM & KUALITI KHIDMAT ALAM

Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd (KA) dan Kualiti Khidmat Alam Sdn Bhd (KKA) telah mendapat pengiktirafan A Very Good OSH di atas pencapaian terbaik mereka pada tahun 2011 dalam memelihara keselamatan dan kesihatan di tempat kerja dari Persatuan Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Malaysia (MSOSH) di Majlis Anugerah MSOSH OSH 2011.

Kedua-dua syarikat ini juga telah memenangi Anugerah MSOSH OSH Gold Class II. Ini adalah anugerah MSOSH ke-7 untuk KA sejak mengambil bahagian pada tahun 2005  dan anugerah ke-5 untuk KKA sejak penyertaan pertamanya pada tahun 2007.

Anugerah-anugerah tersebut telah disampaikan oleh Ir. Fuad Abas, Presiden MSOSH dan Pengerusi Anugerah MSOSH OSH 2011 kepada En. Mohd Norsuradi Man, Ketua Pusat Pengurusan Sisa Buangan Terjadual. Sebanyak 142 organisasi telah menyertai  anugerah tersebut pada tahun ini yang merangkumi tujuh kategori.

Launched late 2010, the Scheduled Waste Management for waste handlers is the first of three planned training modules scheduled to be launched. This pioneering program is aimed at providing sound understanding of the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005 to Waste Generators, especially those involved in the identification, packaging, storage, labelling, transfer and disposal of scheduled wastes.

With no prerequisites set for participants, this program is open to all wastes handlers of various backgrounds to ensure that they are competent on the basics of adequate and effective training, consistent with the requirements of the Scheduled Wastes Regulation 15 – Conduct of Training.

Training sessions are conducted in both Bahasa Melayu and English, and are carried out over a span of 2 or 3 days –the latter includes a site tour to Kualiti Alam’s WMC.

At present, the program has received an overwhelming response. To date, Kualiti Alam conducted over 100 mandays of training for corporations such as Petronas Berhad, Sime Darby Berhad, Kumpulan Perubatan Johor, Ministry of Health, Genting Berhad, Propel, Scomi, NSTP Berhad, The Star Publications and FFM Berhad, amongst others.

Kualiti Alam will further launch programs on Clinical Wastes Management for Healthcare Industry in 2012, aimed at providing specific and customized training modules for hospitals both in the government and private sectors. Subsequently, Kualiti Alam will also launch a Waste Management Compliance Audit, aimed at providing the current legal compliance status pertaining to waste management in accordance to the current Malaysian legislation.

Kualiti Alam is currently offering a discount of up to 30% for the Clinical Waste Management for Healthcare Industry and Waste Management Compliance Audit, which will be conducted in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The guest speaker, Tuan Haji Salehudin Perwira bin Haji Marzuki, Imam 2 Mesjid Kariah Kg Jimah Baru spent over an hour sharing the history of Israk Mikraj with some 40 Muslim employees; on Nabi Muhammad S.A.W.’s night journey from Makkah (Masjidil Haram) to Baitul-Maqdis (Masjid Al Aqsa) and was ascended to Heaven through the miraculous power of Allah. It was after this momentous journey that the five daily prayers were made an obligation upon all Muslims. The special Tazkirah marks the beginning of all preparations leading up to Ramadhan.

Guests were invited to join the mass Asar prayer held at the Surau WMC before proceeding to enjoy the light refreshment prepared.

Program was launched by YB Dato Bandar Johor Bahru, Tn Hj Burhan bin Amin in front of some 500 people. Staff members from the Johor State DOE, MBJB and IRDA took part in the Kayuhan Hijau along with other participants from industries in Johor, Persatuan Basikal Klasik Johor and Kolej Kesihatan Johor Bahru.

UEM Environment Sdn Bhd, represented by the team from the Johor regional office, namely Sharifah Noorul’aini Syed Abdullah, Julia Ramli and Juwenri Ajung, also took this opportunity to educate members of the public on the hazards of carbon emissions by motorised carbon emitting vehicles.

Concurrently, some 300 participants had gathered at Dataran 1 Malaysia, Melaka on the same day to participate in Program Kayuhan Hijau Sungai Melaka, which was held in conjunction with the World Environment Day and the Melaka River Festival 2012.

Five out of the eleven trucks, have been delivered in May 2012 and are currently being used for the collection of solid waste both at residential and commercial areas in Alor Setar, Kedah and Kangar, Perlis.

MPAR focuses on house-to-house waste collection, loading and transferring of waste into the Badger (an underground system) at the Transit Point. Each vehicle is equipped with a robotic arm as a side loader, which ultimately reduces the number of manpower, from four workers to one single operator. The MPAR also optimises the process and simultaneously enhances the efficiency of each task. For instance, it is capable of loading up to 3 tonnes of waste at any one time (MGB 120L for residential areas and MGB 240L for commercial areas).

The MPAR, which uses mechatronic and hydraulic power automation system, is also capable of transforming its mode of operation; from a compactor unit to an open rollon-roll-off (RORO), depending on the task requirement. Each truck is fitted with CCTV that monitors its operations. The data collected is programmed and installed into a USB drive for easy information retrieval.

An interesting fact about the MPAR in Kedah and Perlis is that these vehicles are being manned by women as they are deemed to be careful in handling the sensitive equipment on the trucks. These trucks are smaller in size and are able to manoeuvre behind the back alleys of housing areas and shops.

The one-day event, which is aimed at strengthening relationship among staff, saw various activities taking place including Poco-poco Dance, Health Check, SHEQ Quiz, Slow Bicycle Competition, Recycling Booth, Lucky Draw as well Indoor Game such as Congkak, Batu Seremban, Carrom and Chess. A small cake cutting celebration was also held to mark the SHEQ Day initiative.

In conjunction with the SHEQ Day, UEM Environment in collaboration with the Environmental Management and Research Association of Malaysia also took part in Cyberplant Conservation Network project as a mark its commitment towards the environment. UEM Environment purchased almost 60 fruit trees including durian, rambutan, langsat, semangkuk, bangkong and larah, and planted them at schools located around Bukit Nanas such as Sekolah Menengah Sendayan, Sekolah Rendah Gadong and Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanah Merah. The company had also planted fruit trees at the forest reserve area located behind Kelab Sukan Kualiti Alam clubhouse.

Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd and Kualiti Khidmat Alam Sdn Bhd have had their approach to the prevention of accidents and ill health once again recognised at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2012.

Having being conferred the Gold Medal Award for the fifth consecutive year since 2008, this year also saw Kualiti Khidmat Alam winning the Gold Award for the fourth consecutive year since 2009.

The trip that took place on 24 April 2012 exposed students to the conservation of rare and endangered native plants in our tropical forest with hope to raise and instil awareness amongst the students about the role of plants within its ecosystem.

Held for two days on 30 and 31 March 2012, the hunt kicked off at Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort in Perak and ended at the Bustani Hotel in Jitra, Kedah. The prizes were presented by the Perak DOE Director, YB Dato’ Hassan Bin Mat.

Enviro Challenge was held to educate the participants and industry players as whole on ‘going green’ for the benefit of the environment and simultaneously preserving our resources for our future generations. This event is a regular event on the Perak DOE’s calendar in which Kualiti Alam participates regularly.

The delegation was briefed on UEM Environment’s corporate profile, which highlighted all services rendered, followed by a safety briefing by Najmul Watan from SHE Department.

A presentation by Dr Ali. Al-Alawi MSE/22 (Senior Corporate Environment & SD Advisor) of PDO followed suit; presenting the current scenario of PDO’s waste management strategies in Oman and the types of waste that need to be disposed. The list includes contaminated soil, oil sludge, chemical waste, mercury, medical waste, oil and air filters, used tires, plastic and wood.

The delegates were then taken on tour of WMC’s laboratories and facilities.

A total of 60 staff and very determined bowlers from WMC, regional and site offices throughout the country had participated in this tournament and went all out to win the prizes.

Lots were drawn to assign the players in each team and a handicap of 10 points per frame was given to the women bowlers to keep the competition at par. The winners were presented with a trophy and cash. Juwenri Ajung from our Johor Regional Office emerged as the winner of the men’s category while Muzawati Manzor from WMC topped the women’s category. The team event was won by Juwenri Ajung, Omar Ali (from East Coast Office) and Mohd Faizul (from WMC).

The prizes were presented by Sulaiman Kamilan (President KESUKA), Sathish Kurup (Head of Marketing), Siti Nadzriah Abd Hamid (Head of Environmental Management Services) and Bakhtiar Bahak Udin (Head of Human Resource, Admin and Security).

YB Senator Dato’ Maznah Mazlan, the Deputy Minister of Human Resources was accompanied by Ir Mohtar Musri, Deputy Director General DOSH Malaysia (Operational) and Tn. Hj. Ahmad Kahar bin Abu Bakar, Director of DOSH Negeri Sembilan. Others present were Directors from Jabatan Tenaga Kerja, PERKESO, Majlis Tindakan Negara, Chairman and officers from Majlis Keselamatan Negara and representative from the Deputy Minister of Human Resources’ office.

The visit kicked off with a safety briefing presented by Najmul Watan of SHE Department, followed by a corporate presentation on the facilities at WMC and its wide range of services rendered. The visitors were then taken on a tour of the facilities at WMC, which included the KAMI plant.

The group was taken on tour to the Environmental Management Services (EMS)’s laboratory and WMC; where they had visited the Incinerations, Physical Chemical Treatment and Solidification as well as Kualiti Alam Modularised Incinerator plants also known as KAMI.

KAMI, which was designed and built by locals, received accolades from the group for its capability of treating 10,000 metric tonnes of scheduled waste a year.
