Consignment Note Labelling Waste Packaging
 

Proper packaging is vital for the safe transportation and handling of hazardous waste. The waste producer shall be responsible for the correct packaging, labelling, transportation and specification of the waste as stated in the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005.

Packaging and Types of Wastes

The following rules of thumb apply when selecting the appropriate packing:-

 
For liquid organic/inorganic waste:
  Bunghole drum (steel/plastic) or plastic pallet tank with stopper.
   
For solid waste and empty contaminated container:
  Open top drums (steel/plastic) with covers and clamp.
   
For dry solid waste and contaminated rags:
  One-tonne PP bags.
   
For pharmaceutical and laboratory waste:
  Open top drums (steel or plastic) with cover and clamp.
 
 

Waste Classification

All wastes shall be classified in accordance with the following:

First Schedule, Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Scheduled Waste Code).

Packaging Type

The rule of thumb in the selection of packing containers is as follows:

Standard Packaging Specification

Bunghole drum (steel/plastic) for liquid waste
Max. Dimension: Height must be 90cm
Diameter: 60cm
Drums not to be filled more than 90%
Max. weight of filled drums shall not be more than 200 kilograms.

Open top drums with clamp for solid waste
Max. dimension: Height must be 90cm
Diameter must be 60cm
Drums not to be filled more than 10cm from the top
Drums must not be used for free fluids.

One ton PP bags
Must be double liner
Bags not to be filled more than 10cm from the top
Bags not to be used for free fluids
Bags not to be used for sharp objects

Pallet
All waste must be fastened securely on the good condition pallet. This is to ensure that the waste is secure during transportation. The pallet size is 120cm x 120cm. The number of container/packaging per pallet is as follows:
Drum - Four drums per pallet
Bag - One bag per pallet

Choice of Appropriate Packaging

• The packaging must be robust and capable of withstanding transportation by lorry
• The packaging must be capable of withstanding normal chemical reaction
• Packaging should be leak-proof
• The packaging is not weakened by bulging, corrosion or tear
